What Is FFMI?
FFMI measures how much lean mass you carry relative to your height. Lean mass means everything in your body except fat, including muscle, bone, organs, and water.
Because muscle makes up a large share of lean mass, FFMI works as a useful proxy for muscularity, even though it doesn’t measure muscle mass directly.
How to Calculate FFMI
To calculate your FFMI, you first estimate your fat-free mass using your body weight and body fat percentage:
Fat-free mass = weight [kg] × (1 − body fat [%] / 100)
Then you divide your fat-free mass by your height in meters squared:
FFMI = fat-free mass [kg] / height² [m²]

What Is a Good FFMI Score?
In general, a higher FFMI means you carry more lean mass for your height. For most male natural weightlifters, a normalized FFMI of 20–21.9 is good and 22–23.9 is excellent. For most female natural weightlifters, a normalized FFMI of 17–17.9 is good and 18–18.9 is excellent.

What’s the Difference Between FFMI and Normalized FFMI?
Taller people tend to have higher FFMIs, even if they aren’t more muscular.
Normalized FFMI adjusts for height, which makes it more useful for comparing people of different heights.
How Accurate Is an FFMI Calculator?
To accurately estimate FFMI, you need to also accurately estimate your body fat percentage, which is more difficult than many people realize.
If your body fat estimate is too low, your FFMI will be too high. If your body fat estimate is too high, your FFMI will be too low.

Can FFMI Tell You Whether Someone Is Natural?
Research shows FFMI is a reliable indicator of whether or not someone is taking or has taken steroids to build muscle.
In a renowned study by McLean Hospital, scientists calculated the FFMI of 157 young male athletes, including several elite bodybuilders and world-record holding strongmen, as well as some men undergoing a testosterone injection study.
Of these athletes, 31 admitted to steroid usage in the past, 52 admitted to taking steroids within the previous year, and 74 claimed they had never taken steroids. The researchers also had everyone take a urine test to attempt to validate their claims.
After analyzing the data, the scientists found the steroid users had an average FFMI of 24.8, while the purported non-users averaged 21.8.
Notably, no natural participants had an FFMI above 25, but many enhanced individuals did. This study, along with others, suggests that individuals with a normalized FFMI over 25 likely have used or are using steroids.
Does an FFMI under 25 guarantee natural status?
No. Many steroid users aren’t as defined or developed as pro bodybuilders with FFMIs above 25. Past steroid use also creates lasting cellular changes that can enhance your ability to gain and retain muscle in the future.
In other words, every pound of muscle you gain while on steroids may contribute to your overall muscularity for the rest of your life.
At bottom, here’s what the evidence says about determining whether someone is natty or not based on normalized FFMI:

And if someone’s FFMI is between 18 and 20.9, they likely don’t even lift so who cares. 
FFMI vs. BMI
BMI estimates body weight relative to height, while FFMI estimates lean mass relative to height.
In other words, BMI looks at your overall weight for your height, but FFMI tells you how much lean mass you carry for your height.
That makes FFMI more useful than BMI for judging muscularity, especially in people who lift weights.

FAQ #1: Does an FFMI under 25 mean someone is natural?
No. An FFMI under 25 does not mean someone is natural. A normalized FFMI above 25 is a strong sign that someone is using or has used steroids, but the reverse is not true. A score below 25 does not prove someone has never used them.
First, not all steroid users are extremely muscular. Some take smaller doses, have poor genetics for muscle gain, or train and eat badly, so their FFMI may stay below 25 even though they’re using drugs.
Second, some people used steroids in the past, built muscle while using them, and later stopped. Those people may no longer have an FFMI above 25, but it would still be wrong to call them natural.
FAQ #2: Can FFMI tell you how much muscle you can build naturally?
Not exactly. FFMI can help you judge whether a physique is likely achievable without steroids, but it isn’t designed to predict your exact natural muscle-building potential.
What it tells you is how much lean mass you carry relative to your height. That makes it useful for judging muscularity and for spotting physiques that may be difficult to achieve naturally.

FAQ #3: Can women use FFMI?
Yes. FFMI works for both men and women. The main difference is that women usually carry less lean mass than men, so their FFMI scores tend to be lower. That’s why FFMI should be interpreted using sex-specific ranges, not the same cutoffs for everyone.
